Behind-the-scenes photos are always interesting. Here is Ronald
Colman rehearsing a courtroom speech for the wonderful 1942 social
comedy The Talk of the Town. Director George Stevens is listening
carefully, at right, while Cary Grant seems distracted by other
matters. |

Here is my heartthrob, Thelma Todd, in a cute publicity photo
to ring in the new year of 1932—seventy years ago. I find
it sad that the only way Thelma is remembered, when she is remembered
at all, is for her untimely and mysterious death. She was a bright
and magnetic presence in films of the 1930s, and a delightful
comedienne. I was thrilled when, several years ago, the brand-new
Odyssey cable channel hired me to introduce Hal Roach short-subjects
on the air featuring Laurel and Hardy, Charley Chase, and Thelma
Todd. The show never got a huge audience, but it made a lot of
vintage comedy fans happy—including me! |
