TWO GENERATIONS OF SCREENWRITERS – At the American Film
Institute awards luncheon, Nia Vardalos, who just earned
an Oscar nomination for her screenplay of My Big Fat
Greek Wedding, poses with Fay Kanin, former Academy
president who co-wrote such fine films as the 1958 comedy
Teacher’s Pet (for Clark Gable and Doris Day). |
|
A TROIKA OF FILMMAKERS – Three
talented directors have banded together to produce movies;
I caught up with them at the AFI lunch. From left to
right, Anthony Minghella (The English Patient),
who’s just been named to head the British Film Institute,
Phillip Noyce (The Quiet American, Rabbit Proof Fence),
and Sydney Pollack (The Way We Were, Tootsie),
who’s also given some fine performances in recent years
for such directors as Woody Allen (Husbands and Wives)
and Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut). Their
next joint project as producers is Cold Mountain,
an adaptation of Charles Frazier’s novel which Minghella
has directed, with Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, and Renee
Zellweger.

MUSIC LOVERS – Two of my favorite people, Joan Leslie
and Marsha Hunt, pose with one of my favorite performers,
pianist-singer Page Cavanaugh, at a recent gathering where
Page celebrated his 80th birthday...and belied
that fact with a characteristically lively hour-long set.
Page and his trio now appear the third Sunday of every
month at Spazio’s in Sherman Oaks, California. |
AGELESS FRIENDS - I was pleased to act as master of ceremonies
for a ceremony at the Motion Picture Country Home and
Hospital not long ago, where a wall of memorabilia was
dedicated by and to movie veteran Sam White, who followed
his brothers Jules and Jack into the comedy short-subject
field in the 1930s, and went on to produce and direct
a variety of films and TV shows for the next forty years.
He’s seen here with a longtime friend, actor-turned-director
Vincent Sherman (The Hard Way, Mr. Skeffington).
Both men are 96, but I’m not sure I believe it. |
